PROJECT:   The impacts of small-scale hydropower on aquatic communities
Management Tool / Applied Outcome   Related Policy
A Characterisation of changes to geomorphology associated with low-head, run-of-river hydropower installations ¥ EU Habitats (and species) directive
¥ Protection of Habitats supporting species of international conservation interest (i.e. lampreys, Atlantic salmon, freshwater pearl mussels, eelsÉ)
¥ EU Water Framework Directive and its regional implementations governing water abstraction and impoundment
B Assessment of the probability and severity of damage to aquatic fauna by Archimedean screw turbines, and other physical effects ¥ EU Habitats (and species) directive
¥ Requirements for screens to prevent entry to turbines by aquatic fauna. (Each UK region has separate legislation regarding screening and bypass facilities).
¥ EU Eels regulation (establishing measures for the recovery of the stock of European eel)
C Assessment of the effectiveness of fish passage facilities at low-head hydro installations ¥ EU Habitats (and species) directive
¥ Requirements for fish passage facilities at hydro installations. (UK regions have separate legislation regarding bypass facilities)
D Assessment of the effectiveness of environmental flow management protocols at low-head hydro installations ¥ EU Habitats Directive
¥ EU Water Framework Directive and regional abstraction regulations
